Course Description

We will focus on ethical and equitable considerations when working with psilocybin as facilitators and, for existing clinicians, as an adjunct to psychotherapy, medical practice, or other regulated health disciplines. Potential problematic dispositions and behaviors will be defined. The language of ethics and the law will be defined and discussed.

Course Objectives

  • For students to understand and cultivate awareness of facilitator’s personal bias, including examination of facilitator’s motives.
  • Train students on the Oregon Psilocybin Services Act, it’s related laws, regulations, and professional standards for facilitators including:
    1. Facilitator scope of practice
    2. the expectations of referral when scope of practice is exceeded

  • Train students regarding ethical issues related to psilocybin facilitation including:
    1. Oregon’s Facilitator Code of Ethics
    2. Ethical considerations relating to equity, privilege, bias and power
    3. Awareness of increased vulnerability associated with altered states of consciousness
    4. Appropriate use of touch and client consent to physical contact
    5. Appropriate emotional and sexual boundaries between facilitators and clients both during provision of psilocybin services and at other times; potential harm to clients and consequences for facilitators of breaching those boundaries
    6. Historical and contemporary abuse of power associated with psychedelics, including sexual, emotional and physical abuse, and implications for facilitators
    7. Financial conflicts of interest and duties to clients
    8. Reasonable expectations regarding client outcomes.

  • Train students on accurate record keeping and client confidentiality practices
  • Provide education and awareness of new research related to safety and ethics of providing psilocybin services and resources for professional development following program completion.
  • Education regarding appropriate measures to mitigate risks associated with psilocybin services, including harm reduction, de-escalation, and conflict resolution
